 What is Fair Share?

Fair Share is the annual campaign of the Pacific Skyline Council, Boy Scouts of America designed to help cover the operating costs of the council, as it seeks to bring quality Scouting to all of the youth of San Mateo and northern Santa Clara counties. Annually, the council spends approximately $175 supporting each local Scout in his or her Scouting programs. $175 is what is asked of each family who is financially able to to contribute as their "fair share". Together, we can make Scouting possible.

Why should I support Fair Share?

As we enter another year of Scouting fun, the Pacific Skyline Council is working hard to provide the necessary resources for your child to have a meaningful Scouting experience. The educational and character building benefits of being a Scout are vast and long-lasting. Scouts learn leadership skills here that transform their lives. The lessons explored in scouts help your child develop into the responsible citizens and engaged community leaders of tomorrow.

These dynamic programs aren't free though. It costs the Council $175 a year to provide the programs and services for one Scout. That is the true “Fair Share” cost for each Scout. In 2009, 34% of our current Scouting families contributed what they could to support their children's participation in the program. However, greater participation from ALL of our families is needed. The Fair Share program depends on everyone doing their part.

We greatly appreciate all of the generous support we've received in the past. Now, we need to take it to the next level and it's up to our scouting parents to make it happen. Our goal is to double the percentage of families that contribute to the Fair Share program.

Without dramatically increased participation from our families, the council will have to eliminate, or drastically reduce, several important programs and services including:

  • repairing existing structures that were originally built 30 or 40 years ago and are badly in need of repair.
  • Reducing staffing.
  • Reducing several adult training sessions designed to give adults the best possible tools to provide a fun meaningful program for your Scout

We realize that each family’s financial situation is unique. Whether you give less than the $175 “Fair Share” amount, give at the $175 Fair Share level or are in a position to give more, your support is critical to the Council Councils ability to provide a quality Scouting experience for your child.

It is important to note that no family or Scout will be denied a Scouting experience because of their financial situation. However, if you cannot afford to give the $175 “Fair Share”, a contribution that is meaningful to your family would be appreciated.

We all need to work together to give your scout the best possible path to complete the journey from Tiger Cub to Boy Scout to eagle scout. They deserve it. Thank you for supporting the Fair Share program.

Sincerely,

Hank Scherf, Council President  and Kent Downing, Scout Executive
