2016 Merit Badge Updates

Several merit badges have been updated with new requirements or expanded opportunities.

Here are shortened explanations from our National BSA office:

In 2014, Cooking Merit Badge was revised and once again became an Eagle Scout-required badge. Feedback indicated that the new requirements were a great improvement, but they also had become more technical and science-oriented and the requirements could have been better organized. An update was released to help Scouts earn the badge without losing the intent of the improvements. In 2016, a Scout can continue to use the older requirements or he can switch to the new ones. Both sets of requirements can be found at www.scouting.org/meritbadges.aspxExternal Link.

Lifesaving merit badgeLifesaving
Several requirements were rewritten to reinforce safety and to clarify what is expected. New text and photos have improved the pamphlet.

Photography merit badgePhotography
Requirements were rewritten to cover safety issues when performing photography and to ensure the Scouts Cyber Chip was current. Other requirements were updated to better demonstrate technical aspects of photography.

Snow Sports merit badgeSnow Sports
A snowshoeing option was added to the downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding options.

All current requirements are in the "2016 Boy Scout Requirements" book now available in Scout Shops or go to www.scouting.org/MeritBadges.aspxExternal Link for complete information.
