Established by the Boy Scouts of America, the Distinguished Citizens Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership of citizens in communities across the United States. Honoring distinguished citizenship delivers a message to our youth that character counts. The lives of distinguished citizens put into place guideposts that serve to inspire our youth to lead, to accept responsibility, and to care about principles and causes beyond self-interest.

Portrait of the Wendy Young & Mark Convery family dressed in matching blue The Young-Convery family is a wonderful example of a Pacific Skyline Council Scouting family! Both parents are accomplished science professionals, but Scouting has played and continues to play an important role in their family. Wendy is a former Cub Scout leader and Mark currently serves as a troop committee member. Their two sons, Owen and Carson, are both active in their troop. Life Scout Owen is a member of the Order of the Arrow (Scouting’s National Honor Society), and just returned from the 2015 World Jamboree in Japan. Carson is currently a Second Class Scout and rapidly following in his brother’s footsteps.

Wendy Young, Ph.D., is Vice President of Discovery Chemistry at Genentech. Wendy is a medicinal chemist who designs and develops novel medicines to treat patients with unmet medical needs.

Mark Convery, Ph.D., is a High Energy Physicist and leader of the Neutrino Physics Group at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto. He conducts experiments designed to study some of the most fundamental questions about the universe by exploring its basic constituents – elementary particles.

This year’s DCAD raised over $175,000 to help support the council's ScoutReach program and our increasing emphasis on STEM activities. The ScoutReach program is the council's ongoing commitment to provide every youth with an opportunity to have an enriching Scouting experience.

If you missed this great event but would still like to support the Council’s ScoutReach program and STEM activities, you can still make a donation here. Thanks again for your support!
