Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from units, parents, and Scouts about preparing for camp, registration, and what to expect at Oljato.

Q. Does my Scout need a boating license?

A. Yes. For California programs, anyone operating a motorized vessel must hold a valid California Boater Card issued by the State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways. Scouts enrolled in the Motorboating Merit Badge at Camp Oljato must bring proof of their California Boater Card or a completion certificate from the state’s online boater safety course. Those without a card may still participate in instruction and observation but will not operate motorized vessels. All aquatics activities are supervised under Scouting America’s Safety Afloat guidelines.

Q. Can we stay overnight as guests?

A. Yes. Overnight guests are allowed with advance approval from the Camp Director. All visitors must sign in, pay for meals in advance, and submit a Scouting America Medical Form, Parts A to C. Adults staying overnight must be registered Scouting America members with current Safeguarding Youth Training and California AB506 verification.

Q. How much money should my Scout bring?

A. Scouts should bring about $100 to $150 for Trading Post purchases plus an additional $25 to $30 for travel day meals. Please avoid large bills, 50s or 100s.

Q. What items are not included in the 2026 camp pricing?
