Become a Volunteer
Start Your Volunteer Journey
Adult role models in Scouting provide an ideal learning experience for all youth. Every adult volunteer has something valuable to offer. There are many ways that you can help Scouting in your unit or district. Whether you are volunteering directly with Scouts or helping out behind the scenes, you can make an impact on the lives of Scouts by volunteering your time.
Follow the Steps Below to Register as a Volunteer, Get Trained, and Stay Informed
Step 1. Create an account at https://my.scouting.org if you do not have one.
-
Avoid creating a duplicate account. Not sure if you have a Scouting America Member ID Number and/or a my.scouting account? Need help with your username or a password reset? Email the Council Registrar.

Step 2. Take Scouting America’s new Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) at my.scouting.
-
Once you login, click the SYT shield icon for the English or Spanish course. Click the Enroll button on the next screen and complete the 90-minute course and test. SYT must be renewed annually.
-
SYT is a Scouting America requirement for all members age 18 and over nationwide.

Step 3. Complete your AB506 requirements for the Pacific Skyline Council. AB506 is required for all California-based Scouting America members age 18 and over. Click here for details, including training and forms.
-
2 Hour Mandated Reporter Training: This is different from Scouting America’s Safeguarding Youth Training. You can do the Boy Scouts, Volunteer, or General version. There is a fee, charged by the training provider, to view or download your certificate. Your certificate is not automatically sent to the council.
-
Background Check Consent Form: This is different from Scouting America’s Criminal Background Check Form that is part of the Adult Application.
-
Live Scan Fingerprinting: This must be completed using the Pacific Skyline Council form (ORI # AR856), even if you have done fingerprinting for other organizations, such as youth sports, school, or employment. Click here to find a Live Scan location.

Upload your Mandated Reporter Training certificate and Background Check Consent Form using the upload tool on this page (in step 2) or email them directly to the Council Registrar. Live Scan results will come directly to the Council Registrar via an online secure portal provided by the California DOJ.

Once all 3 AB506 requirements are recorded at the council office, you will be sent a PacSky AB506 completion certificate. The certificates are manually made and sent out weekly.
Don’t wait until the last minute for your Live Scan. Results usually come back same-day or next-day but have taken as long as 8 weeks (and everywhere in between).

If you do not complete AB506 prior to registering as an adult volunteer, we will have to suspend your registration until it’s completed. Suspended members may not participate in Scouting activities.
Step 4. Complete your Adult Application.
-
Online Applications are accepted by most units. Your unit leaders can provide the link to you or you can search for it at https://beascout.scouting.org/.
-
Paper/PDF Applications must be used if online applications are not accepted. Fees must be paid at the council office before your application is processed. The payment must be a check payable to Pacific Skyline Council and sent or brought to 1150 Chess Drive, Foster City CA 94404.

Click here for current adult leader fees.

Once an online application is accepted by your unit leaders, or a paper/PDF application is processed in the office, the standard Scouting America background check will be run. This is different from the Live Scan fingerprinting required for AB506. You will not be a registered adult volunteer until this standard background check is completed. You will receive two emails from Scouting America; the second one stating that the background check is complete is the one that confirms your registration as a registered adult volunteer. This is separate from completion of AB506 requirements.

Step 5. Go to the Scout Shop to buy your uniform if your position requires one. Always call first to check their hours.
-
The Peninsula Scout Shop is located at 1150 Chess Drive, Foster City CA 94404 (map). Call 650-358-0588.
-
The Palo Alto Trading Post is located at 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto CA 94301 (map). Call 650-327-5900.

Step 6. Complete any additional required training for your registered position.
-
Online Training - Log into my.scouting, click the My Training button, then click the Requirements link.
-
In-Person Training - You can find in-person training on the council's Adult Training page and calendar.

Step 7. Get Connected.
-
Sign up for the council's weekly News You Can Use e-newsletter and Scouting America’s Aaron on Scouting e-newsletter. Connect with PacSky on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Step 8. Find Resources.
-
Check out the Guide to Safe Scouting, Guide to Advancement, Scouting America’s Age Appropriate Guidelines and SAFE Project Tool Use Guidelines. You don’t need to memorize all the rules, but it helps to know where to look when you have questions.
