Youth Training

Developing leaders is a central principle of the Scouting program and the Pacific Skyline Council. Scouting provides numerous opportunities and training programs to help youth develop and grow their leadership skills—from training at the unit level to courses offered at Scouting America's high adventure bases.

Youth Leadership Training Path

Scouting America's youth training takes Scouts on a leadership journey that starts at the unit level, progresses to council provided training, and culminates in leadership learning opportunities at High Adventure Bases.

01

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)

ILST is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Scouts. It is intended to help Scouts in leadership positions within their troop understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. ILST is conducted at the troop-level.

Completion of ILST is a prerequisite for Scouts to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE).

02

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth with leadership skills and experience that they can apply within their troops and in other situations requiring leadership of self and others. It is a six-day course that emphasizes hands-on learning in a fun, engaging environment. Through a blend of activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and games, participants will develop confidence and leadership abilities while working together as a team.

03

National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE)

NAYLE is an exciting program that enhances leadership skills and expands upon the team-building and ethical decision-making skills learned in NYLT. NAYLE emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and selfless service, and uses the core elements of NYLT to help youth internalize and strengthen these skills. The National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience course is available at Philmont and The Summit. The material presented is basically the same at both venues but is site-specific.

Additional Youth Training

Other trainings available to youth help prepare them for their next steps in Scouting, from leading Cub Scout youth as a Den Chief and part of our Day Camp Staff to taking the next steps on the path from Life Scout to Eagle.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

NYLT is provided by councils to help their Scouts BSA and Venturing youth build on the leadership skills introduced at the unit level.

An action-packed program provides youth with leadership skills and experiences they can use in Scouting and are applicable in their everyday lives. Key concepts focus on what a leader must be, what a leader must know, and what a leader must do. Leadership skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership. Pacific Skyline Council's NYLT Course uses the National Scouting America NYLT Curriculum.

This course is designed for members of Scouts BSA and Venturing programs. Scouts must be 13 years old and graduated 7th grade before the course begins.

Scouts can register individually, without their troop.

Additional Youth Training

Pacific Skyline Council also offers training for youth serving as Day Camp Staff as well as informational sessions for Life Scouts preparing to work on the Eagle rank. Scouting America also offers training, such as Den Chief training, online via my.scouting.
