Position-Specific Training for Adults
Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. Scouting works best when parents and leaders feel confident and prepared. Online and in-person trainings offer practical skills, guidance, and inspiration to help you lead adventures, build stronger packs and troops, and make every Scout experience meaningful.
Safeguarding Youth Training
(Y01)
Online Training
SYT is a required 90-minute online training. It must be renewed annually, with a 20-minute Refresher course available. SYT is required for all adult volunteers as well as youth ages 18-20 registered as Unit Participant, Venturing Participant, or Exploring Participant.

You are required to take the full 90-minute course if:

You have never taken Safeguarding Youth Training.

Your SYT has been expired for 30 days.

You do not pass the Refresher course quiz.
​
Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is different from Youth Protection Training (YPT) and the Mandated Reporter Training for AB506.
Completing Youth Protection Training (YPT) does not qualify for the SYT Refresher course.
Position-Specific Training for Unit, District, and Council Volunteers
Online Training
The online Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA trainings can be taken in place of the in-person Position-Specific Training courses for Cub Scout Leaders and Scouts BSA Leaders.*

Position-Specific Training is required for adult volunteers. Position-Specific Training does not need to be renewed. However, if you change registered positions, you will need to complete position-specific training for your new role.

*Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is an in-person course only. Merit Badge Counselor Training requires a synchronous virtual training class. See below for course details and registration links.

This in-person training can be taken in place of the online Position-Specific Training Modules for Cub Scout Leaders. You do not need to do both.

Connect with other new leaders during this in-person training. It provides Cub Scout leaders with the experience, basic information and resources needed to perform their functions within the pack. Learn ways to make your den or pack program more dynamic, efficient and FUN!

Troop Leader Position-Specific Training (S24, WS10)
In-Person Training

This in-person training can be taken in place of the online Position-Specific Training Modules for Scouts BSA Leaders. You do not need to do both.
Connect with other new leaders during this in-person training. It provides Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters with the basic information and tools needed to lead successful Scouts BSA troops. Complete this course, IOLS, and Safeguarding Youth Training to be a Scoutmaster or ASM.
IOLS: Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (S11)

This in-person course is required to be a Trained Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster.

​​This hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical skills needed to lead Scouts outdoors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank. Along with Scoutmaster/ASM Position-Specific Training and Safeguarding Youth Training, this course is required for all Scouts BSA direct contact leaders.

Merit Badge Counselor Training
Synchronous Online Training
1st Wednesday of Each Month
This virtual Merit Badge Counselor (MBC) Training class held on Zoom is required for all Pacific Skyline Council Merit Badge Counselors. You must register for one session and submit all required paperwork at least 2 days before the class date.
​The online MBC training module in my.scouting's Training Center is not a replacement for this training.
